Cultural appropriation. You\u2019ve probably seen the term pop up on social media, in news articles, or even in heated conversations about fashion, music, or food. But what does it actually mean? And why do people care so much about it?<\/p>\n
What Is Cultural Appropriation?<\/strong><\/p>\n At its core, cultural appropriation is when someone takes elements from a culture that is not their own\u2014especially a culture that has been historically marginalized or oppressed\u2014and uses it in a way that strips it of its original meaning, without proper understanding, respect, or context.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not the same as cultural exchange, which is about mutual sharing, respect, and collaboration between cultures. Cultural appropriation, on the other hand, often happens when the dominant group \u201cborrows\u201d from a minority culture in a way that reinforces power imbalances.<\/p>\n Common Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n You might see it in:<\/p>\n . Fashion: A designer using Indigenous headdresses on a runway just because they look \u201ccool,\u201d without understanding their spiritual significance.<\/p>\n . Music: Artists profiting from musical styles that originated in Black communities, without acknowledging the roots or giving credit.<\/p>\n . Costumes: Dressing up as a \u201cgeisha,\u201d \u201cNative American,\u201d or in stereotypical attire for Halloween or festivals.<\/p>\n . Language: Using slang or dialects from another culture in a joking or mocking way.<\/p>\n Why It\u2019s a Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n People often say, \u201cBut I\u2019m just appreciating the culture!\u201d \u2014 and that might be the intention. Worse, they may still be discriminated against for practicing their own traditions while others get praised or paid for doing the same thing.<\/p>\n For example: Black people have been criticized or even penalized for wearing natural hairstyles like cornrows or locs, while celebrities may wear those same styles and be called \u201cedgy\u201d or \u201ctrendy.\u201d<\/p>\n Appreciation vs. Appropriation<\/strong><\/p>\n So how do you appreciate a culture without appropriating it?<\/p>\n Here are a few things to consider:<\/p>\n . Learn the history<\/strong>: Understand the significance behind what you’re using or wearing.<\/p>\n . Support creators from that culture<\/strong>: Buy art, clothing, or music from the communities that created them.<\/p>\n . Ask yourself why<\/strong>: Are you using this cultural element to look \u201ccool\u201d or \u201cexotic\u201d? Would you be okay if someone from that culture saw you?<\/p>\n
