Nigeria is richly endowed with natural gas, yet millions of households and businesses still face unreliable and expensive energy. With its large gas reserves, natural gas has the potential to play a major role in strengthening the country’s energy security by supporting electricity generation, industries, transportation and household energy needs. As Nigeria seeks to reduce energy shortages, improve economic productivity and diversify its energy mix, the effective development and utilization of natural gas has become increasingly important. This article examines the role of gas in Nigeria’s energy security, its opportunities, challenges and potential contribution to the country’s economic development.in this article, we discussed energy security, Nigeria gas advantage, why gas power matters, the problem of gas flaring.<\/p>\n

What Does Energy Security Mean for Nigeria?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Energy security<\/strong> is the ability of a country to provide its citizens and economy with sufficient, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.<\/p>\n

For Nigeria, this involves more than having oil and gas reserves. It means ensuring that those resources can actually reach the people and businesses that need them.<\/p>\n

Energy security includes:<\/p>\n

Reliable electricity generation<\/p>\n

Affordable cooking fuel<\/p>\n

Adequate transportation fuel<\/p>\n

Reliable industrial energy<\/p>\n

Stable gas supply to power plants<\/p>\n

Adequate energy infrastructure<\/p>\n

Reduced exposure to international energy-price shocks<\/p>\n

Protection of critical energy infrastructure<\/p>\n

Development of domestic energy resources.<\/p>\n

As global energy dynamics shift and local power demands intensify, natural gas is moving from the margins to the absolute center of Nigeria\u2019s energy security strategy.<\/p>\n

1.Grid Stability and Thermal Power Generation Energy security begins with baseload electricity. In Nigeria, over 80% of the grid-connected electricity is generated by thermal power plants that rely entirely on natural gas.<\/p>\n

While renewable options like solar continue to gain traction, natural gas remains the primary energy source capable of delivering the continuous, large-scale electricity generation required to stabilize Nigeria\u2019s national grid. Without a steady, reliable supply of natural gas to power plants, the national grid faces frequent collapse, forcing businesses and homes to rely on expensive diesel generators.<\/p>\n

  1. Industrialization and Economic Diversification Energy security is deeply tied to economic productivity. Heavy manufacturing, manufacturing plants, cement factories, steel mills, and petrochemical industries require steady, cost-effective heat and power to operate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Cost Competitiveness: Natural gas is significantly cheaper than petrol or heavy fuel oils for powering industrial plants.<\/p>\n

    Raw Material for Fertilizers: Beyond energy, gas serves as a direct feedstock for petrochemicals and fertilizer manufacturing (such as the Dangote Fertilizer Complex). Local fertilizer production boosts agricultural yield, strengthening food security alongside energy security.<\/p>\n

    1. Domestic Fuel Transition: CNG and LPG Energy security directly impacts everyday households through transportation costs and access to clean cooking fuel.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Transportation via Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)Following the removal of petrol subsidies, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has emerged as a key alternative fuel for commercial and private transportation. CNG reduces transportation fuel costs by over 50\u201370% compared to PMS (petrol), insulating commuters and supply chains from volatile global oil price swings.<\/p>\n

      Clean Cooking via Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)Over 100 million Nigerians still rely on traditional biomass (firewood, charcoal) or kerosene for cooking. Expanding LPG distribution combats deforestation, reduces indoor air pollution, a major cause of respiratory illness, and provides affordable, efficient domestic energy access.<\/p>\n

      Nigeria’s Gas Advantage<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Nigeria’s greatest advantage is the sheer size of its gas resources.<\/p>\n

      NUPRC’s 2026 reserves statement put total proven gas reserves at 215.19 TCF, with an 85-year reserves life index.<\/p>\n

      Yet reserves in the ground do not automatically translate into energy security.<\/p>\n

      Nigeria’s challenge has historically been one of development, infrastructure and utilization.<\/p>\n

      The NNPC Gas Master Plan 2026 notes that Nigeria produced about 7.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day in 2025, but commercialized gas production was approximately 4.6 Bcf\/d. The report also states that more than 10% of gas was flared while around 30% was reinjected.<\/p>\n

      Gas and Electricity Generation<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Perhaps the most important role of natural gas in Nigeria’s energy security is electricity generation.<\/p>\n

      Nigeria’s electricity system depends significantly on gas-fired power plants. This makes the gas and power sectors closely connected.<\/p>\n

      When gas supply to power plants is inadequate, electricity generation can fall. When gas supply is reliable, generation capacity can be better utilized.<\/p>\n

      This creates what is often described as the gas-to-power challenge.<\/p>\n

      In May 2026, NUPRC called for greater coordination between the gas, power and financial sectors, arguing that fragmented development among upstream producers, gas infrastructure operators and electricity distributors has contributed to Nigeria’s long-standing gas-to-power difficulties.<\/p>\n

      Gas and Fertilizer Production<\/p>\n

      Nigeria’s agricultural sector can also benefit from natural gas.<\/p>\n

      Natural gas is a key feedstock in the production of ammonia and nitrogen-based fertilizers.<\/p>\n

      This creates a connection between the gas industry and food security.<\/p>\n

      More domestic gas utilization can support fertiliser production, while greater fertiliser availability can contribute to agricultural productivity.<\/p>\n

      The relationship can therefore be viewed as:<\/p>\n

      Natural gas, fertiliser, agriculture, food production, food security.<\/p>\n

      Energy security and food security are increasingly interconnected.<\/p>\n

      A stable supply of affordable gas can therefore have effects far beyond the energy sector itself.<\/p>\n

      LPG and Household Energy Security<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, is another major area where natural gas can contribute to energy security.<\/p>\n

      Nigeria has millions of households that still rely on traditional cooking fuels, particularly firewood and charcoal.<\/p>\n

      Expanding LPG availability can provide households with a cleaner-burning alternative.<\/p>\n

      NUPRC has identified LPG expansion as a major component of greater domestic gas utilization and has reported a national ambition of reaching 5 million tons per year of LPG consumption by 2030.<\/p>\n

      The Problem of Gas Flaring<\/strong><\/p>\n

      One of Nigeria’s biggest contradictions is that the country has significant gas reserves while some associated gas is still flared.<\/p>\n

      Gas flaring occurs when natural gas produced alongside crude oil is burned rather than captured and commercially utilized.<\/p>\n

      From an energy-security perspective, this represents a lost opportunity.<\/p>\n

      Instead of being used for:<\/p>\n

      Electricity;<\/p>\n

      LPG;<\/p>\n

      CNG;<\/p>\n

      Industrial fuel;<\/p>\n

      Petrochemicals;<\/p>\n

      LNG;<\/p>\n

      or other applications,<\/p>\n

      the resource is simply burned.<\/p>\n

      Nigeria has been pursuing gas-flare reduction and commercialization programmed.<\/p>\n

      Gas and Energy Security in Northern Nigeria<\/strong><\/p>\n

      The geographical distribution of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure has historically created disparities.<\/p>\n

      Expanding gas infrastructure toward northern Nigeria could create opportunities for industries and power generation that have previously faced limited access to natural gas.<\/p>\n

      This could support economic diversification beyond the traditional oil-producing regions.<\/p>\n

      A national gas network can therefore become an instrument of regional economic integration.<\/p>\n

      Gas produced in the Niger Delta can ultimately support industries hundreds of kilometers away.<\/p>\n

      That makes infrastructure development a national energy-security priority rather than simply an oil-and-gas project.<\/p>\n

      Gas and Economic Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n

      A reliable gas industry can stimulate economic growth through several channels.<\/p>\n

      Direct investment<\/p>\n

      Gas projects require substantial investment in fields, pipelines, processing facilities and distribution networks.<\/p>\n

      Employment<\/p>\n

      Projects create demand for engineers, technicians, construction workers, logistics companies and professional services.<\/p>\n

      Government revenue<\/p>\n

      Gas production and commercial activity can generate taxes, royalties and other government revenues.<\/p>\n

      Industrial development<\/p>\n

      Affordable gas can attract industries that require dependable energy and feedstock.<\/p>\n

      Export earnings<\/p>\n

      LNG and other gas-related exports can generate foreign exchange.<\/p>\n

      Local manufacturing<\/p>\n

      Gas infrastructure creates opportunities for Nigerian companies involved in fabrication, maintenance and engineering.<\/p>\n

      Conclusion <\/strong><\/p>\n

      Natural gas has a vital role to play in strengthening Nigeria\u2019s energy security. Its availability can support reliable electricity generation, industrial growth, transportation, cooking and other economic activities. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, gas flaring, financing, pipeline security and inconsistent supply must be addressed. With effective policies, increased investment and better utilization of its gas resources, Nigeria can turn its abundant natural gas into a reliable source of energy and a foundation for sustainable economic development.<\/p>\n
