THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPUTER IN THIS GENERATION

INTRODUCTION

In the twenty-first century, it is almost impossible to imagine a single day passing without interacting with a computer. Whether it is the smartphone in your pocket, the laptop on your desk, the point-of-sale system at a local market, or the complex servers routing global internet traffic, computers have moved from being luxury tools to foundational pillars of human civilization.

We live in the digital age, an era where data, connectivity, and automated intelligence dictate how we work, learn, communicate, and entertain ourselves. Understanding the journey, classification, and profound impact of computers is not just an academic exercise it is an appreciation of the machinery that powers modern life.

If you take computer away from this generation, the world will go back 100 years. Try to imagine banking without computers, school results without computers, POS without computers, it is impossible. We are in a generation where a small device called a computer control almost everything. Our fathers used typewriters and Naira notes counted by hand. Today, we use laptops, desktops, tablets and even our phones are mini-computers. The person who does not know how to use a computer in this generation is like someone who cannot read or write in the olden days.

WHAT IS COMPUTER: is a programmable electronic machine that accepts raw data, processes the data, stores the data, and brings out meaningful information at a very fast speed and with accuracy.

HISTORY OF COMPUTER

The history of computer is a story of how man tried to make work easier.

1.Early Counting Tools (Abacus – 3000 Years Ago): The first computer was not electric. It was the Abacus, invented in China, used for counting with beads.

  1. Mechanical Age (1600s – 1800s): In 1642, Blaise Pascal invented the first mechanical calculator. Later in 1833, Charles Babbage, who was called the Father of Computer, designed the Analytical Engine the idea of a modern computer.

  2. Electronic Age (1940s): The first electronic computer was ENIAC in 1945. It was as big as a whole room, very heavy, and consumed a lot of electricity. It could only do simple calculations.

  3. Generations of Computer:

    • First Generation (1940-1956): Used Vacuum Tubes. Very big and hot.

    • Second Generation (1956-1963): Used Transistors. Smaller and faster.

    • Third Generation (1964-1971): Used Integrated Circuits (IC). More powerful.

    • Fourth Generation (1971 Till Date): Used Microprocessors. This gave us our current laptops, desktops, and phones.

    • Fifth Generation (Present & Future): Uses Artificial Intelligence (AI). Computers that can think like humans like ChatGPT, Robots, and Self-driving cars. From a room-size machine to a laptop that fits in a school bag, the computer has come a long way.

      TYPES OF COMPUTERS

Computers are grouped in various shapes, sizes, and processing capabilities, tailored for specific tasks:

      1. SUPERCOMPUTERS: They are the biggest and fastest. Used by NASA, large banks, weather forecasting stations, big oil companies, nuclear research, space exploration, aerodynamic modelling and very expensive.

      2. MAINFRAME COMPUTERS: Large computers used by big organizations to handle massive volumes of data. E.g., banks using it to store all customer accounts, government departments, and multinational corporations (processing thousands of simultaneous transactions).

      3. MINI COMPUTERS: Medium size, used in medium companies, factories, and laboratories.

      4. MICRO COMPUTERS: The common computers we use every day. This includes Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, and Palmtop. By Purpose:

      5. General Purpose Computer: Can do many different tasks type, browse, watch film, play game, design. .

      6. Special Purpose Computer: Designed to do only one specific job. E.g., Computer inside POS machine, inside car, inside CCTV.C. By Function:

      7. Analog Computer: Used to measure things like speed, temperature, fuel.

      8. Digital Computer: The most common today. Works with numbers and letters.

      9. Hybrid Computer: Combination of Analog and Digital. Used in hospitals and petrol stations.

BENEFITS OF COMPUTER IN THIS GENERATION

        1. SPEED AND ACCURACY: A computer can calculate in seconds what a human will take one month to calculate, and without mistake.

        2. STORAGE OF LARGE INFORMATION: A small flash drive of 32GB can store more than 10,000 books. Companies no longer need big storerooms for files. Google Drive can store everything.

        3. EASY COMMUNICATION: With a computer and internet, you can send email, do Zoom meeting, chat on WhatsApp, send reminders to your Wedding Committee instantly.

        4. EDUCATION MADE EASY: Students can learn online, register for JAMB online, check results online, attend classes on YouTube. A computer has brought the classroom into your bedroom.

        5. BUSINESS GROWTH: Businesses use computers for accounting, stock keeping, printing receipts, advertising on social media, and receiving payment. No modern business survives without a computer.

        6. JOB CREATION: Computer has created new jobs like Graphic Designer, Computer Operator, Programmer, Data Entry Clerk, Content Creator, Cyber Cafe Operator.

        7. ENTERTAINMENT AND CREATIVITY: Music, movies, editing, game playing, drawing, video production all are done with computers.

IMPORTANCE OF COMPUTER IN THIS GENERATION

          1. IMPORTANCE IN EDUCATION: In this generation, there is no education without computers. From primary school to university, everything is computer-based. JAMB is CBT, school fees are paid online, assignments are typed and sent via email.

          2. IMPORTANCE IN BUSINESS AND WORKPLACE: In a place like Aziza Manufacturing, computers are used to design piping isometric drawings with AutoCAD, to track workers’ data, to prepare invoices, and to communicate with clients. A worker without computer knowledge cannot be promoted easily.

          3. IMPORTANCE IN BANKING AND FINANCE: All banks today run on computers. Without computers, there is no ATM, no mobile banking app, no transfer, no BVN verification. The whole financial system will collapse automated payroll, inventory tracking, digital marketing, and remote work infrastructure allow businesses to scale globally.

          4. IMPORTANCE IN COMMUNICATION: Computer is the reason we can talk to family members abroad for free via WhatsApp video call. It has turned the world into a global village. Committee meetings can be done online without everyone traveling.

          5. IMPORTANCE IN HEALTHCARE: Doctors now use computers to test blood, to scan the body, to store patient records, and even to do surgery with robotic assistance. Computer has saved many lives.

          6. IMPORTANCE IN DAILY LIFE: From checking weather forecast, to booking flight, to paying NEPA bill online, to ordering food on Jumia Food, computer makes daily life easy.

            CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the computer is the most important invention of this generation. Just as cutlass was important to our fathers in the farm, computer is important to us in this digital farm. Whether you are a trader, student, artisan, welder, pastor, or chairman, you must have at least basic computer knowledge to remain relevant. In this generation, computer literacy is not optional, it is compulsory. Remember: In the olden days, he who cannot read and write is called an illiterate. In this generation, he who cannot use a computer is the new illiterate.

The computer is far more than a clever arrangement of silicon, copper, and binary code; it is the central nervous system of the modern world. From its humble beginnings as a room-sized vacuum-tube calculator to today’s AI-driven smart ecosystems, the computer has expanded the horizons of human potential. As we look toward a future shaped by quantum advancements and ambient intelligence, mastering computer literacy and using these tools responsibly remain the defining keys to personal and societal progress in our generation.
