ETHIOPA<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Ethiopia is a Federal Democratic Republic composed of 9 National Regional States (NRS) \u2013\u00a0Tigray, Afar, Amhara, Oromia, Somali, Benishangul-Gumuz, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), Gambella and Harari\u00a0\u2013 and two administrative councils \u2013 Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n DIVISION OF ETHIOPIA<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Ethiopia\u00a0is a\u00a0federation\u00a0subdivided into ethno-linguistically based\u00a0regional states<\/strong> and chartered cities. This system of administrative regions replaced the\u00a0provinces of Ethiopia\u00a0in 1992 under the\u00a0Transitional Government of Ethiopia\u00a0and was formalised in 1995 when the current\u00a0Constitution of Ethiopia\u00a0came into force.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n The regions are each governed by a regional council whose members are directly elected to represent\u00a0woredas\u00a0(districts). Each council has a president, who is elected by the council. Each region also has an executive committee, whose members are selected by the president from among the councilors and approved by the council. Each region has a sector bureau, which implements the council mandate and reports to the executive committee.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n There are eleven regional states and two chartered cities of Ethiopia, the latter being the country’s capital\u00a0Addis Ababa, and\u00a0Dire Dawa, which was chartered in 2004. Being based on ethnicity and language, rather than physical geography or history, the regions vary enormously in area and population; the most notable example is the\u00a0Harari Region, which has a smaller area and population than either of the chartered cities.
