{"id":8336,"date":"2023-04-17T15:27:55","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T15:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/?p=8336"},"modified":"2024-10-30T09:36:38","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T09:36:38","slug":"political-history-of-congo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/political-history-of-congo\/","title":{"rendered":"POLITICAL HISTORY OF CONGO"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>This post discusses the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/political-history-of-ghana\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8319\">political history<\/a><\/span> of Congo before colonization down to the time of independence, the politics and cabinet of the republic of Congo.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Congo began as a king\u2019s private domain (the\u00a0Congo Free State), evolved into a colony (the Belgian Congo), became independent in 1960 (as the\u00a0Republic of the Congo), and later underwent several name changes (to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, then to Zaire, and back again to the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is the product of a complex pattern of historical forces. Some are traceable to the pre-colonial past, others to the era of colonial rule, and others still to the political convulsions that followed in the wake of independence. All, in one way or another, have left their\u00a0imprint\u00a0on Congolese societies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolsoftware.com.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School Management Software<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Further more, Belgian and Congolese political leaders held a Round Table Conference in Brussels beginning on 18 January 1960. At the end of the conference, on 27 January 1960, it was announced that elections would be held in the Congo on 22 May 1960, and full independence granted on 30 June 1960.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>POLITICS OF CONGO<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Politics in the Republic of the Congo takes place in a framework of a unitary semi-presidential republic, whereby the President is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government of a multi-party system.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Executive power\u00a0is exercised by the President and the\u00a0Government. Recently, following the approval of a new\u00a0Constitution\u00a0after a referendum in 2015, Congo became a\u00a0semi-presidential republic\u00a0after the creation of the post of prime minister who is responsible to the legislature, as well is the cabinet of the former.\u00a0Legislative power\u00a0is vested in both the Government and the two chambers of\u00a0parliament.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Many countries have a semi-presidential republic and\u00a0elections. However, having semi-presidential republic does not necessarily mean that a country is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/political-history-of-egypt\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8301\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">democracy<\/span><\/a>. A central, but not the only, component of democracy is\u00a0free and fair elections, where the population can hold accountable those in power. Data collected from\u00a0Freedom House, shows that the country scored 2\/40 on political rights, and 15\/60 on civil liberties; however, more specifically, the country scored 0\/4 on whether there were free and fair elections.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/upstream-oil-gas-consulting-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oil &amp; Gas Consultancy Services in Nigeria<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In terms of\u00a0civil,\u00a0political, and\u00a0human rights, another tenant of\u00a0democracy, another non-governmental organization, reports that the rule of law \u201conly exists on paper\u201d in the country;\u00a0this follows suit from a report from\u00a0Amnesty International, which documents how Alexander Ibacka Dzabana and Ras le Bol, both human rights leaders in the country were arrested the day after they announced they would hold a press conference to denounce election irregularities that occurred.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>CABINET OF THE REPUBLIC OF CONGO<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u00a0The\u00a0Cabinet of the Republic of the Congo\u00a0governs the\u00a0nation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0current government\u00a0is that of\u00a0Anatole Collinet Makosso\u00a0which has been in place since 15 May 2021.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>EXECUTIVE BRANCH<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td colspan=\"4\"><strong>Main office-holders<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Office<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td><strong>Name<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td><strong>Party<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td><strong>Since<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>President<\/td>\r\n<td>Denis Sassou-Nguesso<\/td>\r\n<td>Party of Labor<\/td>\r\n<td>25 October 1997<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Prime Minister<\/td>\r\n<td>Anatole Collinet Makosso<\/td>\r\n<td>Party of Labor<\/td>\r\n<td>12 May 2021<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>LEGISLATIVE BRANCH<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0Parliament\u00a0 has two\u00a0chambers. The\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/political-history-of-states-in-united-states-of-america-usa\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7833\">National Assembly<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>elects its members to five-year terms in single-seat\u00a0constituencies. The members of the\u00a0Senate are elected for a six-year term by district, local and regional councils.
