{"id":8517,"date":"2023-05-05T14:41:50","date_gmt":"2023-05-05T14:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/?p=8517"},"modified":"2024-10-30T07:55:48","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T07:55:48","slug":"history-of-house-of-representatives-in-tanzania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/history-of-house-of-representatives-in-tanzania\/","title":{"rendered":"HISTORY OF HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES IN TANZANIA"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The\u00a0National Assembly\u00a0of\u00a0Tanzania\u00a0(Swahili:\u00a0<em>Bunge la Tanzania<\/em>) and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/the-past-presidents-of-tanzania-till-date\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8502\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">President of Tanzania<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>of the United Republic make up the\u00a0Parliament of Tanzania.\u00a0The current\u00a0Speaker of the National Assembly\u00a0is\u00a0Tulia Ackson, who presides over a unicameral assembly of 393 members.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The National Assembly of Tanzania was formed as the Legislative Council of Tanzania Mainland \u2013 then known as\u00a0Tanganyika\u00a0\u2013 in 1926. The Council was formed under a law enacted by the British Parliament called the Tanganyika Legislative Council Order and Council. The law was gazetted in Tanganyika on 18 June 1926. The Council consisted of 20 members when it was formed on 7 December 1926 under the Chairmanship of the Governor of Tanganyika,\u00a0Sir Donald Cameron.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/National-Assembly-Tanzania.jpg\" alt=\"National Assembly Tanzania\" width=\"746\" height=\"308\" \/>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">National Assembly Tanzania<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The first Speaker was appointed to replace the Governor as the Chairman of the Council in 1953. The office of Speaker was first occupied on 1 November 1953.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1958, the Council got a few elected representatives for the first time. This was the first election allowed in the colony. Of the three political parties which participated in the elections, namely Tanganyika African Union (TANU), United Tanganyika Party (UTP) and African National Congress (ANC), only TANU won in some constituencies, thus becoming the first party to have elected members on the Council.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Second elections for positions on the Council were held in 1960. These elections were part of the preparations being made to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/political-history-of-tanzania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8499\">Tanganyika <\/a>an independent nation. All members appointed by the Governor were abolished and the people of Tanganyika were allowed to elect all members of the Council.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In the same year, the name of the Council was changed to Legislative Assembly. The changes made in this year were constitutionally necessary so as to allow the President of Tanganyika to give assent to all laws passed instead of the Queen of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/states-and-territories-of-the-united-states-oregon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7958\">United Kingdom.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mandate<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Parliament \u2013 the National Assembly and the President of the United Republic \u2013 obtains its mandate and functions from Chapter 3 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania. The Constitution contains Articles that grant for the establishment, composition and functions of the Parliament.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Functions<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Parliament has powers to deal with both Union and non-Union issues which are not in the scope of the\u00a0Zanzibar\u00a0Government. It is responsible for discussing bills and passing laws.
