INTRODUCTION<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This post discusses the past presidents of South Africa till date, starting from the monarchs, Governor Generals, Ceremonial state presidents, executive state presidents and the current president of South Africa.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

From 1910 to 1961 the head of state under the\u00a0South Africa Act 1909\u00a0was the\u00a0Monarch, who was the same person as the\u00a0Monarch of the United Kingdom\u00a0and of the other\u00a0Dominions\/Commonwealth realms. The Monarch was represented in South Africa by a\u00a0Governor-General. South Africa became a republic under the\u00a0Constitution of 1961\u00a0and the Monarch and Governor-General were replaced by a ceremonial\u00a0State President. In 1984, under the\u00a0Tricameral Constitution, the State President gained executive powers, becoming head of both state and government. Since 1994, under the\u00a0Interim Constitution\u00a0and the current\u00a0Constitution, the head of state and government has been called the\u00a0President.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This is a list of the heads of state of South Africa from the foundation of the\u00a0Union of South Africa\u00a0in 1910 to the present day.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

MONARCHS (1910\u20131961)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The succession to the throne of South Africa was the same as the\u00a0succession to the British throne. During the\u00a0Abdication Crisis\u00a0the South African parliament passed its own act, “His Majesty King Edward the Eighth’s Abdication Act, 1937”, to ratify the abdication of Edward VIII.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

GOVERNOR-GENERAL<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The\u00a0Governor-General\u00a0was the representative of the monarch in South Africa and exercised most of the powers of the monarch. The Governor-General was appointed for an indefinite term, serving at the pleasure of the monarch. After the passage of the\u00a0Statute of Westminster 1931\u00a0and the\u00a0Status of the Union Act, 1934, the Governor-General was appointed solely on the advice of the\u00a0Cabinet of South Africa\u00a0without the involvement of the British government. In the event of a vacancy the\u00a0Chief Justice\u00a0served as\u00a0Officer Administering the Government.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

CEREMONIAL STATE PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA (1961\u20131984)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Under the\u00a01961 Constitution, the first constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the\u00a0State President\u00a0replaced the Monarch as ceremonial head of state. The State President was elected by\u00a0Parliament\u00a0for a seven-year term. In the event of a vacancy the\u00a0President of the Senate\u00a0served as\u00a0Acting\u00a0State President.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Under the\u00a0Interim Constitution\u00a0and the current\u00a0Constitution\u00a0the\u00a0president of South Africa\u00a0is head of both state and government. The president is elected by the\u00a0National Assembly\u00a0and serves a term that expires at the next general election; a president may serve a maximum of two terms. In the event of a vacancy the\u00a0deputy president\u00a0serves as acting president.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
