The Senate was first established as part of Kenya&#8217;s\u00a01963 Constitution.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>After being abolished in 1966, the Senate was re-established by Article 93 of the new\u00a02010 Constitution\u00a0to represent\u00a0counties&#8217; interests as well as pass legislation concerning counties.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>First Senate, 1963\u20131966<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Kenya&#8217;s\u00a01963 Constitution\u00a0established a Senate that consisted of 41 senators elected for six years, with one-third of the members retiring every two years.\u00a0Timothy Chokwe\u00a0served as the first speaker of the Senate. The Senate was abolished in 1966, when its membership was combined with that of the\u00a0House of Representatives\u00a0to form a unicameral legislature, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/history-of-house-of-representatives-in-kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8570\">National Assembly.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Modern Senate, 2013\u2013present<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a02013 General Election\u00a0took place on 4 March 2013.\u00a0Under the new\u00a0Constitution, which was passed during the\u00a02010 Referendum, the 2013 general election was the first to include the election of Senators representing the 47 newly created counties. They were also the first general elections run by the\u00a0Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>According to their share of elected seats, the political parties nominated an additional 16 women. Additional nominations were made for two members representing the youth and two members representing Persons Living with\u00a0Disabilities\u00a0(PLWD). The Speaker of the Senate, who is an\u00a0<em>ex officio<\/em>\u00a0member, is elected by the Senators sworn in on the first sitting of the Senate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Senate-of-Kenya.jpg\" alt=\"Senate Kenya<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Powers<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The powers and role of the Senate in Kenya are as follows<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Empowered to represent the interests of the counties and their governments<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Participates in law-making by considering, debating and approving bills concerning counties<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Determines allocation of national revenue among counties.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Has powers of impeachment over the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/past-presidents-of-kenya-till-date\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8560\"> president<\/a>,<\/span> deputy president, county governor, and deputy governors<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Senate consists of 47 members directly elected by their counties, 16 women nominated by the political parties according to their relative strength in the Senate elections, two members to represent the youth, and two members to represent persons with
