The president leads the\u00a0executive branch\u00a0of the\u00a0government of Uganda\u00a0and is the\u00a0commander-in-chief\u00a0of the\u00a0Uganda People&#8217;s Defense Force.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>EARLY HISTORY<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>From 1962 to 1963, the head of state under the\u00a0Constitution\u00a0of 1962 was the\u00a0Queen of Uganda,\u00a0Elizabeth II, who was also the\u00a0Queen of the United Kingdom\u00a0and the other\u00a0Commonwealth realms. The queen was represented in Uganda by a governor-general. The governor-general was appointed for an indefinite term, serving at the pleasure of the monarch. Since Uganda was granted independence by the Uganda Independence Act 1962, rather than being first established as a semi-autonomous\u00a0dominion\u00a0and later promoted to independence as defined by the\u00a0Statute of Westminster 1931, the governor-general was to be always appointed solely on the advice of the\u00a0Cabinet of Uganda\u00a0without the involvement of the British government. As Uganda became a republic before Walter Coutts, the former colonial governor, was replaced, this has never happened. The president and vice-president were elected by the\u00a0National Assembly\u00a0for a five-year term from among the traditional rulers and constitutional heads of districts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1966, the powers of the president were increased, with the establishment of the executive presidency, but the same rules applied concerning the vacancy of the president. He took office in January 25, 1971 and left office on the 11<sup>th<\/sup> of April 1979. In the event of a vacancy, the\u00a0vice president\u00a0serves as\u00a0acting\u00a0president.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u00a0The president leads the\u00a0executive branch\u00a0of the\u00a0government of Uganda\u00a0and is the\u00a0commander-in-chief\u00a0of the\u00a0Uganda People&#8217;s Defense Force.
