{"id":8608,"date":"2023-05-22T10:52:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-22T10:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/?p=8608"},"modified":"2024-10-30T07:18:35","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T07:18:35","slug":"regions-of-morocco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/regions-of-morocco\/","title":{"rendered":"REGIONS OF MOROCCO"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>INTRODUCTION<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This post discusses the Regions of morocco, from the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/political-history-of-morocco\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8601\"> unitary system<\/a> <\/span>which is from 1997 to 2010 and the Regions since 2015.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Regions\u00a0are currently the highest administrative divisions in\u00a0Morocco. Since 2015, Morocco officially administers 12 regions, including one (Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab) that lies completely within the disputed territory of\u00a0Western Sahara\u00a0and two (La\u00e2youne-Sakia El Hamra\u00a0and\u00a0Guelmim-Oued Noun) that lie partially within it. The regions are subdivided into a total of 75 second-level administrative divisions, which are\u00a0prefectures and provinces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A region is governed by a directly\u00a0elected\u00a0regional council. The president of the council is responsible for carrying out the council&#8217;s decisions. Prior to the\u00a02011 constitutional reforms, this was the responsibility of the\u00a0Wali, the representative of the central government appointed by the King, who now plays a supporting role in the administration of the region.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8609\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Regions-of-Morocco.jpg\" alt=\"Regions of Morocco\" width=\"657\" height=\"722\" \/>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Regions of Morocco<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>REGIONS SINCE 2015<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>On 3 January 2010, the Moroccan government established the Consultative Commission for the Regionalization (CCR), which aimed to\u00a0decentralize\u00a0power to the regions, and confer a greater autonomy to the regions coinciding with the Western Sahara. Each of these regions has geographical and historical features which make it interesting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chaouia-Ouardigha<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in north-central Morocco, the region of Chaouia-Ouardigha has a population of more than 1.6 million. The city of Settat is the capital of the region.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Doukkala-Abda<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in west-Central Morocco, the region of Doukkala-Abda has a population of close to 2 million. The capital city of the region is\u00a0Safi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Fes-Boulemane<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in northern Morocco, the region of Fes-Boulemane is home to more than 1.5 million people. The capital city of the region is the popular tourist destination of\u00a0Fez.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Gharb-Chrarda-B\u00e9ni Hssen<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in north-western Morocco, the region of Gharb-Chrarda-B\u00e9ni Hssen has a population of more than 1.8 million. The capital city of the region is Kenitra.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Grand Casablanca<\/strong>\u00a0Situated along the coast of north-western Morocco, the region of Grand Casablanca, with a population close to 3.9 million, is the most densely populated region of Morocco. The capital city of the region is the popular tourist destination of\u00a0Casablanca.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>La\u00e2youne-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra<\/strong>\u00a0Most of this region falls within Western Sahara, which is subject to an ongoing dispute with regard to who has jurisdiction over the region. Around 260,000 people live in the region which has El Aaiun as its capital city.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Guelmim-Es Semara<\/strong>\u00a0With the southern half of the region of Guelmim-Es Semara falling into the disputed territory of Western Sahara, the region is home to around half a million people and has\u00a0Guelmim\u00a0as its capital city.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in what Morocco considered being the southern part of the country, the region of Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira is situated in the disputed territory of Western Sahara. The region has a population of around 99,000 and the coastal city of Dakhla is its capital.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in central Morocco, the population of the region of Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz is around 3.1 million. The capital of the region is the popular tourist destination of\u00a0Marrakech.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mekn\u00e8s-Tafilalet<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in north-central Morocco, on the border of Algeria, the region of Mekn\u00e8s-Tafilalet is home to more than 2.1 million people. The capital city of the region is Mekn\u00e8s.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Oriental<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in north-eastern Morocco, with Algeria and Spanish Melilla as neighbors, the region of Oriental has a population of close to 2 million and has Oujda as its capital city.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Rabat-Sal\u00e9-Zemmour-Zaer<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in north-western Morocco, the region of Rabat-Sal\u00e9-Zemmour-Zaer has a population of more than 2.3 million. The vibrant city of\u00a0Rabat\u00a0is the region\u2019s capital, as well as being the capital of Morocco.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tadla-Azilal\u00a0<\/strong>Situated in central Morocco, the region of Tadla-Azilal is home to nearly 1.5 million people and has Beni Mellal as its capital city.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tangier-T\u00e9touan<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in north-western Morocco, the region of Tangier-T\u00e9touan has the Atlantic Ocean as its western border, with the Mediterranean Sea and Spain to its north. The population of the region is close to 2.5 million and has Tangier as its capital city.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Souss-Massa-Dra\u00e2<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in central Morocco, the region of Souss-Massa-Dra\u00e2 is home to more than 3.1 million people. The capital city of the region is Agadir.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate<\/strong>\u00a0Situated in northern Morocco, the region of Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate has a population of about 1.8 million.
