PAST PRESIDENTS OF SUDAN TILL DATE<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

INTRODUCTION<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This article lists the heads of state of Sudan since the country’s independence in 1956.The office of Prime Minister was abolished after the\u00a01989 coup d’\u00e9tat,\u00a0and reestablished in 2017 when\u00a0Bakri Hassan Saleh\u00a0was appointed Prime Minister by\u00a0President\u00a0Omar al-Bashir.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

HISTORY OF THE OFFICE<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Since independence was proclaimed on 1 January 1956, six individuals (and three multi-member\u00a0sovereignty councils) have served as\u00a0head of state\u00a0of\u00a0Sudan, currently under the title\u00a0President of the Republic of the Sudan. Prior to independence, Sudan was governed as a\u00a0condominium\u00a0by\u00a0Egypt\u00a0and the\u00a0United Kingdom, under the name\u00a0Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. As such, executive power was vested in a\u00a0diarchy\u00a0consisting of both countries’ heads of state \u2013 at the time of independence, the\u00a0Queen of the United Kingdom\u00a0(Elizabeth II) and the\u00a0Egyptian Revolutionary Command Council\u00a0(headed by\u00a0Gamal Abdel Nasser). Immediately following independence, the role of head of state was filled by a five-member Sovereignty Council, with rival\u00a0nationalist\u00a0factions unable to agree on a single candidate. In November 1958, General\u00a0Ibrahim Abboud\u00a0led a\u00a0military coup d’\u00e9tat, assuming the role of head of state as Chairman of the Supreme Council. Assuming the title of president in 1964, he resigned later that year due to general discontent around the rule of the military regime. Abboud was succeeded by a senior civil servant,\u00a0Sirr Al-Khatim Al-Khalifa, who served as acting president for 18 days before transferring executive authority to a Committee of Sovereignty.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Transitional Military Council was replaced with the\u00a0Transitional Sovereignty Council\u00a0on 20 August 2019, under the chairmanship of al-Burhan. The Sovereignty Council, an 11-member civilian-military\u00a0collective head of state, is designed to lead the country for 39 months in the\u00a0transition to democracy, which is supposed to end with the\u00a0next general election. The Transitional Sovereignty Council was dissolved by al-Burhan on 25 October 2021, following a\u00a0coup d’\u00e9tat.\u00a0Al-Burhan reinstated it on 11 November 2021, with some members replaced.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Abdalla Hamdok\u00a0was appointed as Prime Minister by the\u00a0Transitional Sovereignty Council\u00a0on 21 August 2019, as part of the\u00a0country’s transition to democracy.\u00a0On 25 October 2021, Hamdok was deposed and placed under house arrest, following a\u00a0coup d’\u00e9tat.\u00a0On 21 November 2021, Hamdok was reinstated as prime minister as part of an agreement with the military.\u00a0On 2 January 2022, Hamdok resigned as prime minister.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
