All of Senegal\u2019s dominant ethnic groups share the same Muslim religion and teranga culture, which not only welcomes visitors with open arms, but often invites them to share meals or even spend a night at local homes. In return, visitors should always shake hands, offer gifts which will help the community, and learn a few French or Wolof words.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/regions-of-senegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8912\">REGIONS OF SENEGAL<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>All Senegalese people also share a love of music, an important part of all gatherings and storytelling sessions by local griots. Senegalese music is played with stringed instruments called kora and xalem accompanied by djembe, tabala, tama, sabar, and other traditional drums. The balafon, a wooden instrument similar to a xylophone, is hit with mallets to play its melodic music. One of Senegal\u2019s most famous musicians, Youssou N\u2019Dour, was recently named the nation\u2019s new minister of culture and tourism.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8917\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Cultural-Heritage-of-Senegal.jpg\" alt=\"Cultural Heritage of Senegal\" \/>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cultural Heritage of Senegal<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Senegal is home to a diversity of cultures and multiethnic heritage, both tangible and intangible<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Two rituals of Senegal are listed as Intangible Heritage of Humanity: the Kankourang in 2008 (listed in 2005) and the Khoy (or xoy) in 2013.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>KANKOURANG:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ritual celebrating circumcision among the Mandinkas, the Kankourang has been classified as an intangible heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2005. It is a character who wears a mask and is covered with fibers extracted from tree bark, loaded to protect the circumcised during their outings. Ritual generally practiced in September in the natural region of Casamance and in Mbour where there is a large Mandinka community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>THE KHOY:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Divining ceremony organized at the approach of the rainy season on the square of the villages by the community of Serers of the center-west of Senegal. During this long nocturnal vigil, the master seers, known as saltigues, follow one another in the circle reserved for them to deliver their predictions, to the rhythm of the drums.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A decree of May 19, 2020 from the Ministry of Culture and Communication inscribed 59 cultural elements on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of Senegal, these elements consist of social practices, initiation rites, festive events that punctuate the cycle of life, from birth to death, knowledge and know-how, according to the different regions and communities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These include Bakk (traditional wrestling songs and dances) and \u201cTourou Mame Ndiar\u00e9\u201d in Dakar, \u201cRaw\u201d from Kaloum well in Louga, Waru Guewel, and Jaara in Lingu\u00e8re. In Saint-Louis it is the thi\u00e9bou dieun\u2019, in Fatick the \u201cXoy\u201d, and the Ka\u00f1aleen: fertility rite practiced by women to combat sterility and infant mortality, in Diourbel \u2018the Laabaane\u201d.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Baobab Ndemba: ceremony of sacrifices and propitiatory libations housed in the baobab Ndemba was chosen for Kaffrine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In Kolda, it is the Dimba Tulung: fertility rite practiced by and for women.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In K\u00e9dougou, Amak: ritual associated with the sacred baobab of Iwol to pay homage to the ancestors and formulate prayers for the Bedik community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Kampo Sampat\u00e9: traditional artistic knowledge in wall painting and decoration held by women in the Soninke milieu (Tambacounda), Ekongkong: in warfare generally practiced by young people during the harvest festival with inter-village wrestling sessions in Ziguinchor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Other elements can be retained in the rich cultural heritage of Senegal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>THE SIGNARES: \u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Coming from the Portuguese word \u201cSenhoras (women)\u201d, this name designates a group of black and mixed-race women, with specific sociability, who lived in the colonial trading posts of Gor\u00e9e and Saint-Louis in Senegal, mainly between the 18th and 19th century . Often married to the executives of European trading posts who had just arrived, the Signares enjoyed certain privileges and even had captives.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They often had a fortune from the trade of precious products and were distinguished by the organization of \u201cMbootaay (regroupings)\u201d, simb sessions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In her book \u201cFrom the Signare to the Senegalese Diriyank\u00e9\u201d (Harmattan 2014), historian and teacher Aissata Kane LO wonders about the extensions of the Signare culture to the contemporary phenomenon of the Diriyank\u00e9s.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>THE SIMB OR \u201cFALSE LION\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Simb or \u201cfalse lion\u201d dance is a show generally organized during summer holidays or during wrestling sessions, led by men made up and disguised as lions. According to tradition, at the time when Senegal was still covered with forests, any hunter who survived the attack of a lion then behaved like the beast, following the shock. To treat it, the healers then proceeded to rituals of possession, which the organizers of simb (or simb gaind\u00e9) try to reproduce.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>THE SCULPTURE<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The most famous Senegalese sculptor remains undoubtedly Ousmane SOW, revealed in 1987 at the French Cultural Center in Dakar and famous for his bronze and human-sized works, which have been exhibited in twenty places around the world.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Until his death in December 2016, Ousmane SOW made a series of sculptures representing the Nouba wrestlers of South Sudan, in 1984, the Masai (1988), the Zulus (1991) and finally, the Fulani in 1993.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>TALES<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The tales of Senegal develop varied themes, with moral teaching as their main foundation.
