The Senate has 26 members elected or appointed for eight-year terms: 12 elected by provincial councils, eight appointed by the President of the Republic to ensure the representation of historically marginalized communities, four by the National Consultative Forum of Political Organizations, and two elected by the staff of the universities (one public, one private). Additionally, former presidents can request to become a member of the Senate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/chamber-of-deputies-rwanda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9072\">CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES (RWANDA)<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Senate was established in 2003<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Senate is a body elected by the population and entrusted with acting on behalf of the population.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9078\" style=\"width: 841px; height: 562px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Senate-of-Rwanda.jpg\" alt=\"Senate of Rwanda\" width=\"841\" height=\"562\" \/>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Senate of Rwanda<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>THE MAIN FUNCTIONS AND POWERS OF THE SENATE ARE:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Representing the population;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Passing legislation;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Scrutinizing and overseeing executive action;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Approving the appointment of State Officials referred to in Article 88 of the Constitution;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Supervising the application of the fundamental principles referred to in Articles 10 and the previsions of article 56 &amp; 57 of the Constitution.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aziza.com.ng\/read\/2023\/08\/political-history-of-rwanda\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9059\">POLITICAL HISTORY OF RWANDA<\/a><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>THE SENATE OF RWANDA HAS 26 MEMBERS INCLUDING:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 12 senators elected by the specific councils in accordance with the administrative entities;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 8 senators appointed by the President of the Republic;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 4 senators designated by the Forum of Political organizations;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1 senator elected among lecturers and researchers of Public Universities and higher learning institutions;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1 senator elected among lecturers and researchers of Private Universities and higher learning institutions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>After the transitional period (1994-2003), the first legislature of the Senate commenced in 2003 and ended in 2011.
