The Senate was established following constitutional reforms approved in a referendum in 2011 and enacted in February 2012. The first elections were held in May 2013.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Senate has 70 members, of which 55 are elected and 15 are appointed by the President.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Government Structure:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Chief of State: President Teodoro OBIANG Nguema Mbasogo (since 3 August 1979)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Head of Government: Prime Minister Francisco Pascual Eyegue Obama Asu (since 23 June 2016)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Assembly: Bicameral legislature consisting of a 100-member Chamber of Deputies and a 70-member Senate<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Electoral System:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The president is elected by a first-past-the-post system. They are elected to five-year terms.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The prime minister is appointed by the president.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The 100 members of the Chamber of Deputies are elected by closed-list proportional representation from 19 multi-member constituencies. They are elected to five-year terms.
