INTRODUCTION.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It is the only U.S. state outside North America, the only state that is an archipelago, and the only state in the tropics. Hawaii is also one of several U.S. states that were independent nations prior to joining the Union. Hawaii comprises nearly the entire Hawaiian archipelago, 137 volcanic islands spanning 1,500 miles (2,400 km) that are physio graphically and ethnologically part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania.\u00a0 The PO Ocean coastline is consequently the fourth longest in the U.S., at about 750 miles (1,210 km). The eight main islands, from northwest to southeast, are Ni\u02bbihau, Kaua\u02bbi, O\u02bbahu, Moloka\u02bbi, L\u0101na\u02bbi, Kaho\u02bbolawe, Maui, and Hawai\u02bbi, after which the state is named; it is often called the \u201cBig Island\u201d or \u201cHawaii Island\u201d to avoid confusion with the state or archipelago. The uninhabited Northwestern Hawaiian Islands make up most of the Papah\u0101naumoku\u0101kea Marine National Monument, the nation\u2019s largest protected area and the third largest in the world. Of the 50 U.S. states, Hawaii is the eighth-smallest in land area and the 11th<\/sup>-least populous, but with 1.4 million residents ranks 13th<\/sup> in population density. Two-thirds of the population lives on O\u2019ahu, home to the state\u2019s capital and largest city, Honolulu. Hawaii is among the country\u2019s most diverse states, owing to its central location in the Pacific and over two centuries of migration. As one of only six majority-minority states, it has the nation\u2019s only Asian American plurality, its largest Buddhist community and the largest proportion of multiracial people. Consequently, it is a unique melting pot of North American and East Asian cultures, in addition to its indigenous Hawaiian heritage. Historically dominated by a plantation economy, Hawaii remains a major agricultural exporter due to its fertile soil and uniquely tropical climate in the U.S. Its economy has gradually diversified since the mid-20th<\/sup> century, with tourism and military defense becoming the two largest sectors. The state attracts tourists, surfers, and scientists from around the world with its diverse natural scenery, warm tropical climate, abundance of public beaches, oceanic surroundings, active volcanoes, and clear skies on the Big Island. Hawaii hosts the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the world\u2019s largest naval command, as well as 75,000 employees of the Defense Department. Although its relative isolation results in one of the nation\u2019s highest costs of living, Hawaii is the third-wealthiest state.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

HAWAII TERRITORIES.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Territory of Hawaii or Hawaii Territory was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from April 30, 1900, until August 21, 1959, when most of its territory, excluding Palmyra Island, was admitted to the United States as the 50th<\/sup> U.S. state, the State of Hawaii. The Hawaii Admission Act specified that the State of Hawaii would not include Palmyra Island, the Midway Islands, Kingman Reef, and Johnston Atoll, which includes Johnston (or Kalama) Island and Sand Island. On July 4, 1898, the United States Congress passed the Newlands Resolution authorizing the U.S. annexation of the Republic of Hawaii, and five weeks later, on August 12, Hawaii became a U.S. territory. In April 1900 Congress approved the Hawaiian Organic Act which organized the territory. United States Public Law 103-150 adopted in 1993, (informally known as the Apology resolution), acknowledged that “the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii occurred with the active participation of agents and citizens of the United States\u201d and also “that the Native Hawaiian people never directly relinquished to the United States their claims to their inherent sovereignty as a people over their national lands, either through the Kingdom of Hawaii or through a plebiscite or referendum”. Hawaii’s territorial history includes a period from 1941 to 1944, during World War II, when the islands were placed under martial law. Civilian government was dissolved and a military governor was appointed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

LIST OF GOVERNORS AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE\u2019S MEMBERS.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Hawaii Territory was organized on June 14, 1900, remaining a territory for 59 years. Twelve people served as territorial governor, appointed by the president of the United States. The governor of the State of Hawaii is the head of government of Hawaii and commander-in-chief of the state’s military forces. The governor has a duty to enforce state laws the power to either approve or veto bills passed by the Hawaii Legislature; the power to convene the legislature and the power to grant pardons, except in cases of treason and impeachment. Of the eight governors of the state, two have been elected to three terms, four have been elected to two terms, and one has been elected to one term. No state governor has yet resigned or died in office, nor did any territorial governor die in office. George Ariyoshi was the first Asian American to be governor of any U.S. state. The current governor is Democrat David Ige, who took office on December 1, 2014. The longest-serving governors are John A. Burns (1962\u20131974) and George Ariyoshi (1974\u20131986), both of whom served 12 years each.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
