INTRODUCTION

Since the inception of this world, God has always punished disobedience to His word or commands which is why our first parents were not spared when they sinned. In fact, all the disobedience we naturally have against God is due to the fall of our first parents Adam and Eve who were the first to disobey God and suffered the consequences for that. The consequences of disobeying God can be seen throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament as we will see as we continue our discussion on this topic. So, if you are a disobedient person who disobeys God and does evil, you will face the consequences of your disobedience sooner or later. With that said, let’s look at the 5 major consequences of disobedience in the bible that come when you disobey God’s word or commandments.

What Is Disobedience? Biblical Definition.

The simple definition of disobedience is simply going against what God has commanded in His word or not obeying what God tells us to do. When we disobey God, we go against His commandments or the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ He taught when He was on earth in the New Testament. Disobedience is what makes us stubborn and rebellious against God and this is due to our fallen sinful nature we inherited from our first parents who first disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden.

Why Is Disobedience A Sin?

Disobedience is a sin because it’s a transgression of God’s law, which is why 1 John 3:4 in the New Testament tells us that sin is the transgression of the law. Secondly, disobedience is a sin because it shows rebellion and is caused when you don’t trust God or do not want anything to do with Him. We are all disobedient by birth because of our first parents who fell in the Garden of Eden by eating the forbidden fruit, the first act of disobedient man committed against God. God views disobedience as sinful because it portrays Satan’s character and nature in your life from where disobedience and rebellion all started and came. You need to remember that God expects obedience from all His children to whatever He commands and if we love God, we will obey Him.

Five Consequences of Disobeying God’s Word

Below are the 5 major consequences of disobeying God’s word to remind you that disobedience to God is never a good idea and only attracts punishment and judgment.

1. Disobedience Brings God’s Punishment: One of the major consequences of disobeying God is that it attracts God’s punishment on an individual because God has promised in Leviticus 26:14 that disobedience will always be punished. The punishment that comes when you disobey God can clearly be seen in the Old Testament in the case of the children of Israel who were punished by God when they disobeyed Him as we see in Jeremiah 30:1-24. In the Old Testament, we can see that God sent various punishments in the form of pestilences, diseases, defeat by the enemy, affliction, etc. to the Israelites when they disobeyed God’s word.

• Disobedience Attracts God’s Judgment: The other consequence that comes when you disobey God is that you attract God’s judgment upon your life for being a rebellious and disobedient child. One thing you need to know is that disobedience always brings wrath and judgment upon a person’s life especially if that person continues to live in willful disobedience. As a proof of this, we can already see in the Old Testament in the case of the Israelites where God rained down many judgments on them because of disobeying Him as we see in 1 Chronicles 21:14 onwards.

• Disobedience Attracts God’s Wrath: In the New Testament, the apostle Paul tells us in Romans 1:18-32 that God’s anger or wrath is revealed against all forms of disobedience, ungodliness, unrighteousness, and the people who suppress the truth in their wickedness and disobedience. From the above verse, we can see that being disobedient to God’s word always attracts God’s anger on anyone who disobeys Him by continuing to be stubborn in sin. We can see this happen in the case of the children of Israel in Judges 2:20 where the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel for their disobedience, which caused God to deliver them to the hands of their enemies, the philistines. Kind David the psalmist further reminds us in Psalms 7:10-12 that God is angry with the wicked daily, especially those who live in willful disobedience to His word and commandments written in the bible.

• Disobedience Damns You in Hell: The bible tells us that all the disobedience will finally be cast into hell fire where they will spend the rest of their eternity if they don’t repent. We are told in Proverbs 11:21 that the disobedient and the wicked who join hands to do evil won’t go unpunished and that they will eventually have to reap the fruits of their disobedience in hell if they die in their rebellion. Jesus Christ warned in Matthews 13:41 that everything that offends will be finally be cast in the fiery furnace of hell where the disobedient will be weeping and gnashing of teeth along with the devil and his fallen angels.

• Disobedience Hinders God’s Blessings: Last but not least, disobedience hinders you from receiving God’s blessing in your life. Instead, the plagues and calamities God promised in Deuteronomy 28:15 to the Israelites will be upon them if they rebelled and will also be in their life if they live in willful disobedience. Remember, the Lord can’t bless you if you want to have nothing to do with obeying His Word, and what He promised in Deuteronomy 28: 13,14 won’t apply in your life if you live a life that doesn’t, please the Lord. This is why we see that when the children of Israel disobeyed the Lord, they stopped enjoying that favor and blessing God promised them if they remained obedient to His word, He commanded them to do.

INTRODUCTION

Anger is a common emotion that arises when one encounters a threat, insult, injustice, or frustration. God Himself feels anger, and He has given us this same ability. However, because of our fallen nature, we often respond in a sinful manner when this intense feeling overwhelms us.

One prevalent sinful response is to hold onto anger until it becomes part of our character. It takes up residence in the innermost being and starts to twist thinking and agitate emotions. Peace and joy are noticeably absent because they cannot coexist with the anxiety and frustration that accompany bitterness.

Anger is something we all struggle with, and it can really damage and destroy our relationships with each other. It also is a false substitute for the process of dealing with those who have offended you. Instead of going to the offender in love and seeking peace, as Jesus teaches, we go in anger to verbally (or otherwise) punish them. So today we look at the danger of anger and next week, Lord willing, righteous anger.

James 1:19-20 says, “Know this, my beloved sisters and brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

Anger is a God given desire for justice; that thing be done rightly and fairly. This is the way that God has made us to function. It arises when we think that we or others have been wronged in some way. And it prompts us to act to make things right. God gave this to us to promote righteousness. It is meant to lead to the pointing out and correction of injustice

However, our anger often leads us to sin. There is a paradox here, for even though it is meant to promote righteousness, our anger often does not promote true righteousness. As James 1:20 says, “the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

Why? 1) Anger is difficult to control. It is explosive, like a fire that quickly rages out of control. As Proverbs 27:4 says, anger is “overwhelming.” We become angry but can’t control our anger. 2) Our anger is often guided by our own distorted sense of what God wants us to do. It stirs us up – but to do what? We often have a warped understanding of justice that turns our behavior into hateful vengeance. And as Christians, we often forget the way of Jesus and ignore God’s call to mercy, love of enemies and forgiveness. Instead, in our anger, we seek to punish others.

So, in the hands of self-centered, weak humans (like all of us) anger leads us not to do God’s righteousness – but to do our own unrighteousness. Proverbs 29:22 says, “one given to anger causes much transgression.” Psalm 37:8 says, “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.”

Examples of how anger often leads us to sin against others

1) Instead of loving others – it can lead us to murder – Genesis 4:5-7. Cain felt he had been wronged when God did not accept his offering, but did accept his brother’s. This made him angry. He did not control his anger and it led him to murder his brother.

2) Instead of building up others – it can lead us to tear down others with our words – Matthew 5:22. “. . . Whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” Jesus teaches here that angry words that tear down, simple insults and expressions of judgment, are also a form of murder. They are also a breaking of the sixth commandment

3) Instead of living in peace with each other – it leads to quarreling and strife.  Proverbs 15:18 says, “A hot-tempered person stirs up strife.” Anger often leaves in its wake wounded people and broken relationships.

4) Instead of kindness to others – it leads us to be cruel in our words and actions – Proverbs 27:4. Our anger makes us say things and do things that are extreme and cruel to others – things we wouldn’t do and say if we were not angry.

5) Instead of being willing to love and forgive – it leads us to hold on to bitterness. Bitterness is an unwillingness to forgive. Ephesians 4:31 says, “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you.” Notice the connection between bitterness and anger is this verse.

6) Instead of acts of love for others – it leads us to do acts of malice. Malice has to do with acts of hatred towards others. This also comes from Ephesians 4:31, “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”

The danger of anger

What I’m saying is that anger is so hard to control, so easily corruptible, so easily leads us to sin, and the consequences are so grave – we must beware!

1) Anger is so dangerous – If we are angry, we must be very careful for sin. As Ephesians 4:26 says, “Be angry, but do not sin.”

2) Anger is so dangerous – We should not befriend someone who cannot control their anger. Proverbs 22:24 says – “Make no friendship with a person given to anger, nor go with a wrathful person.”

3) Anger is do dangerous -We should be careful not to provoke others to anger – which could cause them to stumble into sinful anger.  Ephesians 6:4 says, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger . . ..” This admonition can certainly be more broadly applied in other relationships.

INTRODUCTION

When God entered into a covenant relationship with the Israelites, he furnished them with certain fundamental regulations engraved in stone to symbolize their permanence. These “Ten Commandments, ” as they are styled, contain certain injunctions of a moral character dealing with adultery, theft, false witness, and covetous behavior (Exod 20:14-19). The last three offenses are social in character, involving the community of God to a greater or lesser degree. But the commandment prohibiting adultery deals with an act of a highly personal nature, occurring between normally consenting adults, which violates the “one flesh” character of marriage.

MEANING OF ADULTERY

The definition of adultery is the “voluntary sexual relations between a married person and someone other than that person’s current spouse.”  Synonyms of adultery include terms like cheating, infidelity, and unfaithfulness. There is sometimes a confusion between adultery and fornication. While they are related topics, there are notable distinctions between the two.

The Mosaic law (Numbers 5:11-31) prescribed that the suspected wife should be tried by the ordeal of the “water of jealousy.” There is, however, no recorded instance of the application of this law. In subsequent times the Rabbis made various regulations with the view of discovering the guilty party, and of bringing about a divorce. It has been inferred from John 8:1-11 that this sin became very common during the age preceding the destruction of Jerusalem.

CONSEQUENCES OF ADULTERY IN THE BIBLE.

There are rational reasons and practical benefits for each of God’s laws. He established them as intelligent design. Yet since humans are fallen, and we sometimes think we will not suffer the outcomes of transgressing His truth or even consider the consequences. We must make the conscious decision and effort to not live by the flesh, but by the Holy Spirit within us. “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6)

When a woman caught in adultery was brought to Jesus, the religious leaders of the day wanted Him to uphold their law that called for capital punishment by stoning her. Jesus dismissed them by asking for the person with no sin to cast the first stone. Of course, no one could because they understood that they were all sinners. Jesus, the only one there without sin, told the woman to leave and stop sinning (John 8:1–11).

The Jewish leaders were referencing the Old Testament law provided to the nation of Israel that called for the death penalty for adultery (Leviticus 20:10) among other crimes. The law called for the death penalty for both the woman and the man convicted of adultery. There was no separate set of laws for women or men. The law was established to show God’s people right and wrong, to define the requirement for righteousness, and to differentiate the Israelites from their neighbors. It should be noted that this law was meant specifically for Israel during that time period. Jesus brought a new covenant into effect. Christians do not live under a theocracy and are not called to injure those who sin.

Though adultery is no longer punishable by death, it is identified as sin in the Bible and all sin leads to spiritual death (Romans 6:23). One of Jesus’ central messages of the New Testament is the concept of grace from God and between men (John 1:14 and 3:17). Adultery is forgivable in Jesus. God can also make reconciliation possible.

The Bible makes it clear that adultery carries with it serious, terrible consequences. First Corinthians 6:18–20 tells us that sexual sin offends God and should be avoided: “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So, glorify God in your body.”

Our character is significantly damaged by adultery, as Proverbs tells us. The adulterer is simple and senseless (Proverbs 7:7), compared to an animal caught in a snare and then slaughtered (Proverbs 7:22–23), and has no sense, destroying himself (Proverbs 6:32). The writer of Proverbs says the adulterer is led to death (Proverbs 7:26–27).

The Proverbs also tell us that the consequences of adultery carry with them a punishment in and of itself, including the loss of honor and strength (Proverbs 5:9–11), a ruined reputation (Proverbs 5:14), bondage and death (Proverbs 5:22–23), self-destruction (Proverbs 6:32), and the vengeance of a jealous husband (Proverbs 6:34).

Proverbs 6 includes a whole section warning us against adultery, including this caution: “Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished” (Proverbs 6:27–29).

In the Old Testament, adultery was punishable by death. Today, that punishment does not apply, though adultery still carries with it significant consequences. Despite these consequences, grace can be found in Jesus. He came “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). John 3:17 tells us, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Earthly consequences of adultery may remain, but the eternal punishment is taken away in our Savior, Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION

Wolves are not a thing that sheep should only concern themselves with when things get obviously bad. Sheep must always be alert and ready for such predators. And if the wolves can dress up as sheep, the threat becomes infinitely more severe. Jesus chose very strong words here to emphasize our need to be ever vigilant against a subtle but hostile threat to us and our brothers and sisters in Christ. But how are we to identify a threat like this? If the false prophet looks and acts exactly like a sheep, and is only inwardly a wolf, how do we figure it out? We cannot see the contents of the heart. Jesus, therefore, gave us a sign to look for: “You will know them by their fruits.”

Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:15-20 (and similar passages) are a powerful warning that there are many who come in His name who are actively seeking to lead us away from the truth, and we are to be on guard against this threat. • “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits,” (Matthew 7:15-20).

What are the fruits? The Gospel of Luke gives us additional details that help to clarify:

“For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart,” (Luke 6:43-45).

We, therefore, will know the prophet by what he speaks. What comes out of his mouth will give him away. He may appear clean and upright to us on the outside in every way, but if deceit and falsehood are in his heart, this false teaching, false prophecy, and others perversions of the truth will come out of his mouth. The fruit of a fig tree is figs. The fruit of a grape fine is grapes. The fruit of a prophet is his prophecy. Jesus elsewhere said:

“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned,” (Matthew 12:33-37).

Jesus’ words, offered similar words about what the fruit is that exposes the heart:

“But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh,” (James 3:8-12).

The genuine word of the LORD is life-sustaining grain while the false prophets bring forward only a dead, dry stalk. Again, you will know the true and false prophet by the content of their words. Elsewhere, Jesus plainly warned:

“for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance,” (Mark 13:22-23).

INTRODUCTION

Anger is a dangerous emotion. It can make us do things we regret, and it often severely clouds our judgement. The Bible actually has a lot to say about anger. It offers God’s divine advice on how to push back against our temper issues. As we learn more about how to deal with anger the Biblical way, we can begin to experience the true freedom and peace that comes from living in Christ! When we are angry, we often make rash decisions that we later regret. We lose our self-control and start acting out. But when we take a step back and breathe, we can usually see the situation more clearly and make a better decision. All without the need to so-called ‘conquer’ our opponents in hostility. When you are deeply hurt by people you least expect or faced with enormous challenges. Of course, there is no better way to display your emotions than being angry. It is natural you feel that way. After all, God gets angry too. The book of Deuteronomy 9:8 makes this even more explicit. It says, “you provoked the LORD to wrath, and the LORD was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you.”

Therefore, there is nothing wrong if you get angry. In fact, Paul said the same thing too – “Be ye angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither gives place to the devil. “

Seldom you are provoked beyond measure that you want to respond in a hostile fashion. In severe cases, your thoughts are filled with dangerous ideas – To harm or to kill. But you need to calm down at this point because if you don’t, you may give place to the devil. At first, anger comes into your mind, and then the devil quickly pushes you to sin.
