PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF BEING A SINGLE MOTHER.

In this post we will be looking at the Psychological and Social Effects of Single Parenting in a Child’s Life (The impact of single-parent families)

INTRODUCTION

Sharing what happened throughout the day at dinner, opening presents at Christmas, and even having a shouting match with your younger brother; all these things show that you have an inseparable bond with your family members. But not all people are blessed with a happy family. In this modern age, we see a large number of single parents struggling to provide a secure home for their children. There are many reasons for this increase in the number of children raised by single parents. The most common causes of single parenting are teenage pregnancy, divorce, and the unwillingness of the partner to share responsibility.  In such instances, it is the children of single-parent that suffer the most when couples are not committed to making their relationship work. Children who are brought up in a two-parent home enjoy better educational and financial advantages. Negative effects of single parenting on a child can affect a child’s social and emotional development.

The impact of single-parent families on child development.

1. Lack of finances: One of the most common single parenthood issues is a lack of finances. Single parents face the challenge of limited funds because they are the only source of income. A single parent might have to work more extended hours to meet the financial requirements of running a household single-handedly.  A shortage of money can mean that children might be forced to drop out of dance classes or sports league as the single parent is unable to meet the additional expense. If there are several children in the house, then it might become very challenging to fulfill all the needs of the children. The financial stress of living from hand to mouth puts additional pressure on the single parent, which can be easily recognized by the children.

2. Academic achievement: Mothers usually run single-parent households. The absence of a father, together with financial hardships, can increase the danger of poor academic performance by such children. Similarly, the psychological effects of growing up without a mother can be very damaging to a child. If there is no financial support from fathers, single mothers have to work more, which means that they are unable to spend much time with their children. They might have to miss special school events and may not be at home to help them with their homework. This lack of supervision and guidance can result in poor performance in school in comparison to children who have emotional and financial support from fathers. Moreover, this also adds to the problems single mothers face in society as people tend to judge them as an inadequate parent.

3. Low self-esteem: A child gets a sense of security from home, which affects how they interact with the outside world. Low expectations from people around them is another effect of being raised by a single parent. They may be unable to maintain a happy and healthy marriage life as they have not experienced living with both parents. The primary cause of low self-esteem in such children stems from the fact that they do not get adequate attention and advice from their only parent, which can severely hinder their emotional and psychological growth.  It is essential to show that you are proud of your child’s achievements by putting his report card up on the refrigerator or rewarding them for doing household chores.   Children of single-parent can also feel lonely if they spend too much time alone, making it challenging for them to interact with their age group. They may suffer from abandonment issues and may have trouble connecting with older individuals because of a lack of confidence. If they feel that their parents do not love them, then they struggle to understand how someone else will find them worthy. Such issues can get magnified when a child is growing up with a single parent. The effects of single parenting on children can be more severe, given that they only have one guardian who is looking out for their interests.

4. Behavioral pattern: Single parent households usually have a shortage of finances, which can have emotional effects on the children, such as increased frustration and anger and an increased danger of violent behavior. They might experience feelings of sadness, anxiety, loneliness, abandonment, and have difficulty with socializing. The association of single parents with different partners can also leave a profound impact on the child. Such single-parent children may also have a commitment phobia.

POSITIVE EFFECTS

There are a few positive effects of single parenting on children, but they greatly rely on parenting techniques and personality types. A recent study shows that children who are over 12 years of age do not show any adverse signs of single parenting on their educational, psychological, and social development. Furthermore, such children show strong responsibility skills as the duty of household tasks and chores fall upon them. Such kids form a powerful bond with their parents as they are codependent on each other. Children raised by single parents also develop strong relationships with family, friends, or extended family members who have been an intricate part of their lives.

Single parenting tips

Raising a kid under any circumstance is a strenuous task; on top of that, being a single parent only brings the added pressure and stress. However, while you juggle to manage yourself, your children, and your home, there are certain things you can do to the whole single-parenting more efficiently.

Here are some tips for you to manage your way through the ups and downs of single parenting and counter the negative effects of being raised by a single mother or father:

  • Set time aside every day to connect with your kids, find out about what they are doing, and show them your love and care.
  • Have a structured routine, especially for your kids. Kids thrive when they stick to a routine, and it also helps them to inculcate good habits.
  • Look after yourself. For you to be able to raise your kids in a healthy environment, you need to ensure that you are healthy enough. Workout whenever you can and eat healthily. This would also inspire your kids.
  • Don’t blame yourself, and stay positive. Even Rome wasn’t built in a day, so creating a good home and family for you and your kids would take a lot of time and patience that would need you to remain positive.

EFFECTS OF SINGLE PARENT IN CHILD UP BRINGING.

In this post we will be looking at effects of single parent in child up bringing and Helpful Ways to Ease Single Parenting Stress.

INTRODUCTION

Single parenting is not a piece of cake. Raising a baby on your own, taking care of all their needs, and taking care of yourself, all at the same time, can be a stressful job. But if you plan it all out effectively, you will be able to carry everything out with ease. You might face a few challenges during the single parenting period, but they can also be overcome. Read on to know simple and easy ways that can make your single parenting experience fun for you and your child as well. Single parenting or single parenthood is a parent bringing up a child or children alone without a partner. The reasons for this can vary. They may have been in a relationship which they left, or their partner might have passed away, or been summoned to an active job. Some women choose to be single parents via surrogacy. When you go back to 500 years, the parenting approach was completely different. There is a phrase that says “it takes a village to raise a child,” which is quite accurate. Then, the child used to be nurtured by parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and close families. With time and modernization, the ‘village’ shrank, and it still continues to disappear. Human beings have evolved so that the community raises them, but when it is not present, then the dysfunction will potentially develop.

EFFECTS OF SINGLE PARENT IN CHILD UP BRINGING

Positive Effects of Single Parenting: Most times, the negative effects of single-parent households are quite apparent; economic troubles and abandonment-related trust issues. But there are also positive effects on raising a child.

  • Strong Mother-Child Bonding
  • Strong Sense of Community
  • Share Responsibilities
  • Maturity
  • Parental Role Modelling

Negative Effects of Single Parenting: You cannot be the best mom out there, and there may be adverse effects as well. However, your style of parenting, attitude, perseverance, and support system should all go a long way minimizing negative effects like:

  • Financial Troubles
  • Low Parenting Quality
  • Children After a Divorce
  • Emotional Problems
  • Loneliness
  • Adjustment Difficulties

Helpful Ways to Ease Single Parenting Stress.

Raising kids, without the support of your better half, is not an easy thing to do as you have to single-handedly face a fair share of concerns, dilemmas, and other issues. However, don’t lose heart over any issues! You can cope with the stress with a great amount of planning and with these simple tips.

Set Up a Routine: Structure your day in such a way that it offers a sense of security to your child. Maintain a relatively consistent mealtime, wake up time and bedtime.

Taking Care of Yourself: Your child may observe you being angry, upset or sad when major life issues crop up. It is quite common in all families, be it a single parent or nuclear families. The only thing you should do is to let her know your negative emotions are not because of her, and you love her more than anything else.

Offer Unconditional Love to Your Children: Even after separating from your partner, your kids will still look for the same love and concern they used to get before. They need the same protection, routine, encouragement to learn and support from a loving and trusting parent.

Set Ground Rules: You will not have anyone else to back you up, so establishing certain ground rules will help to raise your children without much effort.

Try Handling Finances: Taking care of the family on a single income or being dependent on the former spouse is the toughest aspects of single parenting. It is important for you to understand about long term investments, budget your money accordingly, plan for retirement and if possible, you should try to earn more by doing an additional job.

Support Groups: It is evident that single parents need help to take care of kids when they are on run to do errands or someone to talk when they are disturbed. You can ask your extended family and friends to help. You may also join a support group, or hire a babysitter to take care of your little one.

Give Honest Replies: It is quite obvious that your child may question you about the other parent or the changes in the family. Try answering her in an honest and open way. Also, offer her the required support and help she required to deal with those emotions.

Remove Guilt: You may feel guilty for the things you cannot provide or the time you may spend with your kids. For your good, try to focus on all the things to accomplish for the day and also show the love, comfort and attention to your little ones.

Remain Positive: You may quickly become overwhelmed by the demands and responsibilities of single parenting. You may also suffer the pain of death or divorce of your spouse. Despite all these, you have to stay positive as your kids may easily get affected by your moods.

Set Up Role Models: Children will benefit when you give them examples of some real personalities. Look within your family or friends of any sex to be role models for your kids. Also, set a gathering where the responsible adult spends some quality time with your little one.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE MOTHER AND SINGLE PARENT.

In this post we will be looking at the Legal differences between a single parent family and a single mother, Differences in real life and in the legal part.

INTRODUCTION

One thing is what we understand socially and another is the legal question. That is why we want to explain to you in this article what are the differences between both concepts, which in turn have different casuistry. In Spain the law determines that a Single parent family is when a child is legally recognized by one of his parents. The child has the last names of only one parent in the family book. By law a single mother is the woman who has never married.

Legal differences between a single parent family and a single mother

These are the 4 differences that occur between a single-parent family and single mother (or father). Cases that are established:

  • A woman has never been married, has children and lives with a partner who recognizes children. Would single mother, but not single parent because the child’s father, or another person lives with her as a couple. The practical situation, regardless of the salary that comes into the house, is of two adults living together, in mutual support.
  • A woman marries, has children in that marriage, then divorces, and she has custody of the children and is listed as the only adult in the family home. So yes, it is single parent family. Although there is no coexistence, the other parent, theoretically, has responsibilities to the child. In these cases, reality offers us a lot of different cases.
  • A woman she gets married, has children and her husband dies. She is left in charge of the children, because the husband is dead. She is a single parent family, she is not a single mother, she is a widow.
  • A woman He does not marry and has children not recognized in the civil registry by any parent. It may be due to non-appearance of the father, because he is adopted, insemination or similar. In this case, she is a single mother and also a single parent family. The only recognized parent is the mother. Whether or not you live with another person, that person is not responsible for the child.

Differences in real life and in the legal part

Being a single mother or being a single parent family, beyond bureaucratic issues, has some practical effects in daily life. Everyone can value it as positive or negative.

  • If you are a single mother or a single-parent family of the divorced-separated or widowed type and you live with a partner, you have distribution of expenses, mutual income and support in the tasks. Let’s say that in everyday life the relationship is like a marriage, regardless of whether or not the parent of the children is.
  • You are a separated or divorced mother, but the father is not present physically, neither economically, nor emotionally to share the upbringing. The law says that you must receive a pension, but the reality is that you are alone (at the parent level) for all intents and purposes. You are a widowed mother; you do not have a new partner. You are alone in all aspects, less economically than in the widow’s pension, you are recognized as a widowed mother.
  • Are divorced mother, and you have the other parent to share parenting and, or, provide a financial pension. You share the upbringing and maintenance of the children according to what has been established by agreement, be it legal or personal.
  • You are a single mother no recognized parent, and no partner living with you. You are alone for everything, both in responsibility during the upbringing and in the financial aspects. If the father appears, but without recognizing the child, or another person performs the functions of the father, then the emotional and economic situation of the mother changes, but in person everything will depend on the new relationship that is established.

SINGLE MOTHER AND WHAT IT MEANS.

In this post we will be looking at the meaning of single mother, positive and negative effect of single parenting and Parental concerns.

INTRODUCTION.

Since 1950, the number of one-parent families has increased substantially. In 1970, about 11 percent of children lived in single-parent families. During the 1970s, divorce became much more common, and the number of families headed by one parent increased rapidly. The number peaked in the 1980s and then declined slightly in the 1990s. By 1996, 31 percent of children lived in single-parent families. In 2002, the number was 28 percent. Many other children have lived in single-parent families for a time before their biological parent remarried, when they moved into a two-parent family with one biological parent and one step parent. The reasons for single-parent families have also changed. In the mid-twentieth century, most single-parent families came about because of the death of a spouse. In the 1970s and 1980s, most single-parent families were the result of divorce. In the early 2000s, more and more single parents have never married. Many of these single parents live with an adult partner, sometimes even the unmarried father of their child. These families are counted by the Census Bureau as single-parent families, although two adults are present. Still other families are counted as single-parent families if the parents are married, but one is away for an extended period, for example, on military deployment. The most common type of single-parent family is one that consists of a mother and her biological children. In 2002, 16.5 million or 23 percent of all children were living with their single mother. This group included 48 percent of all African-American children, 16 percent of all non-Hispanic white children, 13 percent of Asian/Pacific Islander children, and 25 percent of children of Hispanic origin. However, these numbers do not give a true picture of household organization, because 11 percent of all children were actually living in homes where their mother was sharing a home with an adult to whom she was not married. This group includes 14 percent of white children, 6 percent of African-American children, 11 percent of Asian/Pacific Islander, and 12 percent of Hispanic children. Households headed by a single father increased substantially after the early 1980s, reflecting society’s changing attitudes about the role of fathers in child rearing. In 1970, only 1 percent of children lived with a single father. In 2002, about 5 percent of children under age 18 lived with their single fathers. Single fathers, however, are much more likely to be divorced than never married and much more likely than single mothers to be sharing a home with an adult to whom they are not married. For example, 33 percent of Caucasian children lived with fathers who were unmarried but cohabiting with another adult. The rate was 29 percent for African-American children, 30 percent for Asian/Pacific Islanders, and 46 percent for children of Hispanic origin. It is clear that not all single-parent families are the same and that within different ethnic and racial groups, the number and type of single-parent families varies considerably. Adoption by single individuals has also soared. In 1970 only 0.5 to 4 percent of adoptive parents were single. In the 1980s this rate increased from 8 to 34 percent.

Meaning Of Single Mother A single mother also referred to as a “single mom” is an unmarried female aka single parent who has little to no support from the child/children’s father. In most cases the father is completely removed from her and the child’s life by choice or necessity and he provides minimal financial support. Single moms are mothers who are not in relationships and the biological father is typically absent from the day-to-day functions and responsibilities of the child’s upbringing. Even if the child’s father has 50/50 custody or visitation, if the woman is an unmarried mother and not in a committed relationship, she falls under the category of “single mom”. A single mom typically provides over 50% of the costs to raise and care for the dependent and can typically be considered head of household on taxes and can claim the child when filing.

Positive Effect of Single Parenting

Most times, the negative effects of single-parent households are quite apparent; economic troubles and abandonment-related trust issues. But there are also positive effects on raising a child.

  1. Strong Mother-Child Bonding: Spending quality time with your little one creates a unique bond that will be stronger than the one if you were a nuclear parent. It goes well in the case of custodial parents (one who has sole physical custody of the child) and also non-custodial parents who play a significant role in their child’s lives.
  • Realize your sole importance and do not try to diminish it.
  • If you think your bond is not strong, try to work on it by reading stories together, watching movies, playing your child’s favorite games, etc.
  • Your child’s connection with you will not end, and it continues to grow and evolve even after they turn 18.

2. Strong Sense of Community: As with the phrase discussed above “it takes a village to raise a child,” it works with single parent families as well. Children who have single parents will also have many supporters. Most cases, the extended family members will play a unique role in a child’s life. Single parents who do not live with their extended families will try participating in community groups which may include single parent support groups, synagogues and churches

  • Join sole parent support groups
  • Involve yourself in your child’s academics

3. Share Responsibilities: Children raised by single parents will not just have token responsibilities to do, but their contribution to the complete family system is necessary. In this way, children will understand the value of their contribution and can take pleasure in their work. However, there should be a clear parent-child structure and roles and responsibilities so the child doesn’t become responsible age inappropriately.

  • Let your children recognize the efforts they put in
  • Praise them for doing the house chores
  • Be specific while asking them to offer the help

4. Maturity: Children will find their parents working hard, and it will force them to collaborate and work along with their parents. Additionally, the children will also learn to manage their disappointments in life. For children to have these skills, they still need guidance from their single parents. Hence, it’s still a collaboration between the parent and the child with clear boundary and structure.

  • If you find your child is disappointed, respond with support, empathy and encouragement.
  • These experiences will help children become empathetic and caring adults.
  • You may not prevent them from feeling disappointed or sad all the time, but you can manage their emotions.

5. Parental Role Modelling: Children brought up in single parent families will realize their importance in their parents’ lives. Let your children balance their needs with needs of the family. Teach them to consider other’s needs as well.

  • Let your children balance their needs with needs of the family.
  • Teach them to consider other’s needs as well.

Negative Effects of Single Parenting

You cannot be the best mom out there, and there may be adverse effects as well. However, your style of parenting, attitude, perseverance, and support system should all go a long way minimizing negative effects like:

  1. Financial Troubles: Most single parents work long hours to meet the financial needs of the family. It is necessary to run the household and raise the children. There may be chances when you have to deny your kids from their requirements, and you may have to juggle repeatedly between financial commitments. Your child may thus be not able to take the opportunities he always dreamt of due to financial concerns.
  2. Low Parenting Quality: Your way of parenting suffers when many responsibilities add to your everyday life. Your long hours of working may make you miss your child’s important school functions. You may not afford a babysitter to take out some valuable down time. You may react more if you see your child being untidy. You may also disclose your personal, professional or financial issues with your child. But they will not have the maturity and emotional strength to deal with the situations so as to help you. Take out some time and find ways to have the individual time with each of your children. Have some me-time too; it doesn’t have to be long but may be enough for self-soothing.
  3. Children After a Divorce: If your reason for single parenting is divorce, your children will also suffer from adjustment problems or may have the feeling of being ashamed. If your partner stops looking out after your kids as he or she used to do before, your children may badly suffer resentment. There are also chances they still hold on to bad memories of your divorce. If you notice your child having trouble sleeping or experiencing problems at school, you should counsel her or take her for counselling. Parent should also spend time with the child and give child the space to grieve.
  4. Emotional Problems: Your children are likely to suffer from self-esteem problems. They may crave for affection, which they will not get enough because of your busy schedule. Thus, they may lose expectations in their relationships later in life. or they will actually have more expectation for affection and company down the road but that will not create a healthy dynamic.  They will take all the blame for their living conditions. It may be difficult for you to stop them from drawing comparisons, but you can help your children build self-regard. Things like acknowledging her when she has done something good and posting a card in her room about her worth will help build self-esteem. Another way to help children build self-esteem is let them take the lead in completing tasks with some challenges. Some single parents have the tender to jump in too quickly to help their children.
  5. Loneliness: It is another challenge most single parents face. They will not only be able to share their difficulties with their spouse but also cannot share their joys as well. If the parent is single because of spouse’s death or any tragedy, it will be even harder for the parent to bear all sorts of responsibilities.
  6. Adjustment Difficulties: Children will also face the issues along with their single parents. They may be a sense of loss, poverty and continuous exposure to parental arguments. While the parent’s sense of loss is because of the missing spouse, a child’s loss will be a guide or a protector. It will be tougher for children at their young age.

PARENTAL CONCERNS.

Being a single parent can be hard and lonely. There is often no other adult with whom to share decision-making, discipline, and financial responsibilities. The full burden of finding responsible childcare, earning a living, and parenting falls on one individual. However, the lack of a second parent often has a less negative impact on children than family instability, lack of structure, and inconsistent enforcement of parental standards. Single parents may want to follow these steps in order to create positive experiences for their children:

  • Find stable, safe child care.
  • Establish a home routine and stick to it.
  • Apply rules and discipline clearly and consistently.
  • Allow the child to be a child and not ask him or her to solve adult problems.
  • Get to know the important people (teachers, coaches, friends) in the child’s life.
  • Answer questions about the other parent calmly and honestly.
  • Avoid behavior that causes the child to feel pressed to choose between divorced parents.
  • Explain financial limitations honestly.

HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL SINGLE MOTHER.

In this post we will be looking at tips to be a successful single mother.

INTRODUCTION.

Today, it’s common to talk about single-parent family problems and their disadvantages to children. This can lead some single parents to think there is little they can do to have a successful family. That’s not so. Not all children growing up in single-parent families experience negative consequences, just as not all overweight people have heart attacks. More importantly, focusing on the weaknesses and problems doesn’t help single parents and their children become strong. The Family: A Proclamation to the World states that adaptations in family life become necessary when disability, death, or other circumstances (such as divorce) make such adaptations necessary. God loves us and will bless us in these circumstances. While it isn’t easy, single parent families can adapt and be strong families.

Acceptance of Responsibility: Successful single parents accept the responsibilities and challenges of single parenting. They neither minimize nor exaggerate problems but seek solutions. They acknowledge the difficulties (such as a lack of personal time, a restricted social life, sole responsibility for meeting multiple needs, and financial stress) without self-pity or bitterness.

Commitment to Family: Successful single parents make the family their highest priority. They focus on being the best possible single parent, which often means putting the needs of the child first. They genuinely like and enjoy children, sacrificing time, money, and energy for the sake of the children. They try to be supportive and patient and help children cope. Like other effective parents, they are consistent and not highly punitive. This discipline style gives children choices, uses natural and logical consequences, and provides structure.

Open Communication: Successful single parents foster open communication. These parents encourage clear and open expression of thoughts and feelings in the family as a key to developing honest and trusting relationships. They foster individuality within a supportive family unit. These parents strive to accomplish this individuality and independence by each member having individual interests and building individual skills.

Successful Home Management: Successful single parents manage the family needs well. They strive to be well organized and dependable, and they work hard to coordinate schedules. They take pride in their ability to financially provide for the family, although finances still remain a struggle. One single mother effectively organized her children to help with chores. She typed out the jobs for the day on 3 x 5-inch cards and expected a report before dinner.

Care of Self: Successful single parents take care of themselves. Despite lack of time, these parents recognize that caring for themselves is important. They attempt to do so through physical, spiritual, emotional, and social means. They are connected to others on whom they can call on for practical and emotional support. One single mother who managed a home-based business found time to get away on a vacation occasionally or go dancing with friends.

Maintain Traditions and Relationships: Successful single-parent families maintain traditions, whether bedtime rituals, special family times together, or holiday celebrations. A tradition is any event with special meaning to a family. When a family has been disrupted, maintaining traditions becomes a stabilizing force, something that can be depended on. If the other parent is living, successful single parents encourage the child’s involvement with the nonresidential parent, as long as the other parent doesn’t present some danger to the child. When possible, the other parent shares responsibility for the children. Regardless of where the children live, they receive economic and emotional support from both parents.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL GIRL CHILD’S DAY AND BENEFITS.

In this Post we will be looking at the history of international girl child’s day, the significance and benefits of international girl child’s day.

INTRODUCTION

Girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders. An investment in realizing the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability. Girls are breaking boundaries and barriers posed by stereotypes and exclusion, including those directed at children with disabilities and those living in marginalized communities. As entrepreneurs, innovators and initiators of global movements, girls are creating a world that is relevant for them and future generations. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by world leaders in 2015, embody a roadmap for progress that is sustainable and leaves no one behind. Achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment is integral to each of the 17 goals. Only by ensuring the rights of women and girls across all the goals will we get to justice and inclusion, economies that work for all, and sustaining our shared environment now and for future generations.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL GIRL CHILD’S DAY

The International Day of Girls initiative began as a project of Plan International, a non-governmental organization that operates worldwide. The idea for an International Day of Observance and celebration grew out of Plan International’s Because I Am a Girl campaign, which raises awareness of the importance of nurturing girls globally and in developing countries in particular. Plan International representatives in Canada approached the Canadian federal government to seek to the coalition of supporters raised awareness of the initiative internationally. Eventually, Plan International urged the United Nations to become involved. International Day of Girls was formally proposed as a resolution by Canada in the United Nations General Assembly. Rona Ambrose, Canada’s Minister for the Status of Women, sponsored the resolution; a delegation of women and girls made presentations in support of the initiative at the 55th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly voted to pass a resolution adopting October 11, 2012 as the inaugural International Day of Girls. The resolution states that the Day of Girls recognizes: the empowerment of and investment in girls, which are critical for economic growth, the achievement of all Millennium Development Goals, including the eradication of poverty and extreme poverty, as well as the meaningful participation of girls in decisions that affect them, are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights, and recognizing also that empowering girls requires their active participation in decision-making processes and the active support and engagement of their parents, legal guardians, families and care providers, as well as boys and men and the wider community. Each year’s Day of Girls has a theme; the first was “ending child marriage”, The second, in 2013, was “innovating for girls’ education”, the third, in 2014, was “Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence”, and the fourth, in 2015, was “The Power of Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030”. The 2016 theme was “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls”, the 2017 theme was “Empower Girls: Before, during and after crises”, and the theme for 2018 was “With Her: A Skilled Girl Force”. By 2013, worldwide, there were around 2,043 events for Day of Girls.

SIGNIFICANCE OF INTERNATIONAL GIRL CHILD’S DAY

Achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment is an integral part of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that UN member nations adopted in 2015. The International Day of the Girl Child holds the key to achieving this as empowering women and girls, who represent half of the world’s population, is crucial to accelerating sustainable development. Nations need to pledge to assist young girls to grow into empowered women, who have access to proper healthcare, skill-based learning facilities and equal opportunities in a world free from gender-based violence and discrimination. The objective of National Girl Child Day is to create awareness about the rights a girl owns and to give girls the opportunities like everyone else, also to support the girl child of the nation and remove gender-based biases. Another objective of celebrating this day is to promote awareness about the inequalities that a girl child faces and educate people about girl’s education. Basically, to value them and to respect them like everybody else and give a new perspective towards girl child and to decrease discrimination. The main focus is on changing society’s attitude towards girls, decrease female feticide and create awareness about the decreasing sex ratio. The objectives of the Scheme are as under:

  • To prevent gender biased sex selective elimination
  • To ensure survival and protection of the girl child
  • To ensure education and participation of the girl child

BENEFITS OF INTERNATIONAL GIRL CHILD’S DAY.

  • It recognizes that the meaningful participation of girls in decisions that affect their lives is the key to break the cycle of discrimination and violence and empower young ladies to become inspirited, free women of tomorrow.
  • The day focuses on the rights, safety and education of girls. The core objective is to make girls an active part of the progress of the world.
  • As part of the celebration, a theme is selected to highlight the need of the hour. This year, the theme has been set as “Digital generation. Our generation,” acknowledging the growing digital world and how a digital gap can also widen the gender gap.
  • Access to education, healthcare services, skill-based learning facilities, equal opportunities, safeguards against gender-based violence and discrimination are common themes that are worked upon year after year. In accordance with this year’s theme “Digital generation. Our generation,” the focus is on bridging the digital divide.
  • Various world leaders and UN agencies post wishes and messages on social media to mark the International Day of the Girl Child.

Migrating A Website To WordPress

Now powering over 17% of the Web, WordPress is increasingly becoming the content management system (CMS) of choice for the average user. But what about websites built with an outdated CMS or without a CMS at all? Does moving to WordPress mean starting over and losing all the time, energy and money put into the current website? Nope!

Migrating a website (including the design) over to WordPress is actually easier than you might think. In this guide, we’ll outline the migration process and work through the steps with a sample project. We’ll also cover some of the challenges you might encounter and review the solutions.

WordPress Themes

About This Guide

Before we get to work, let’s establish some context. First, this guide was written primarily with beginners in mind and will be most helpful for basic websites. Some of you will likely encounter advanced aspects of WordPress migration, but they are beyond the scope of this guide. If you’re tackling an advanced migration and get stuck, feel free to share your difficulty in the comments below.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this guide is to help you with the following:

  • Plan an effective migration to WordPress.
  • Walk through the technical steps involved in migrating.
  • Get ideas and resources to solve common migration challenges.
  • WordPress Themes

ASSUMPTIONS

I assume you have basic familiarity with WordPress. Previous development experience with WordPress would be helpful, but not necessary. I also assume you have an existing website and design that you want to migrate to WordPress.

BASIC STEPS

Here are the basic steps that I recommend you follow for a typical WordPress migration:

  1. Evaluate website.
Work carefully through the pages on your existing website, identifying all of the types of content (standard pages, photo galleries, resource pages, etc.) and noting any areas that need special attention.
  2. Set up environment.
Set up WordPress and get ready to import.
  3. Import content.
Bring over and organize your content, whether via an importing tool, manual entry (for a small amount, when no tool is available) or a custom importing process.
  4. Migrate design.
Incorporate your existing design into a custom WordPress theme.
  5. Review website, go live.
Carefully review the import, making adjustments where needed, set up any URL redirects, and then go live.
  6. WordPress Themes

With this outline in mind, let’s work through each step in detail.

Start With A Plan

The key to a successful migration is to carefully evaluate your current website. You need to figure out how to import and structure the content in WordPress before carrying over the design.

While the principles are the same across migration projects, the details often vary. So, below are two lists of questions to ask as you work out a plan.

IMPORTED CONTENT

  • How much content needs to be imported (number of pages, number of images, etc.)?
  • Is the volume low enough to be imported manually, or do you need a tool?
  • If you need a tool, does one already exist?
  • Can the content be categorized into the standard “posts” and “pages,” or does it call for custom post types?
  • Does extra content need to be stored for certain pages (custom fields, taxonomies, etc.)?
  • Will the URL structure change? If so, will the old URLs need to be redirected?

EXISTING FUNCTIONALITY

  • Does the website integrate any third-party services (data collection, reservations, etc.)?
  • Do any forms need to be migrated (contact forms, application forms, etc.)?
  • Is access to any content restricted (such as members-only content)?
  • Does the website sell products (digital or physical)?
  • Do any administrative tools need to be carried over (such as custom CMS functionality)?
  • WordPress Themes

A WORKING EXAMPLE

My brother, Joshua Wold, has volunteered a website to serve as an example; it’s for a side project of his in which he sells posters and postcards of a Vegan Food Pyramid. He built the website in plain HTML, with some basic PHP includes for the header and footer. Below is a screencast of me evaluating the website to give you a sense of how the process will work. Enjoy!

Set Up WordPress

Before importing the content, we need to get WordPress ready to go. If you’re just experimenting or if you prefer offline development, start with a local installation of WordPress. Otherwise, the next step is to install WordPress with your current hosting provider; or you could use the migration process as a great opportunity to move to a new host.

Once WordPress is up and running, you’re ready for action!

WordPress Themes

For our example, we’ve installed WordPress with the same host, setting it up in a wp directory for the duration of the migration process.

SETTINGS AND PLUGINS

With WordPress Themes installed, we’ll make a few minor adjustments:

  • Update permalinks.
Go to Settings → Permalinks to make changes. In most cases, I’ll switch to “postname”-style permalinks.
  • Update users.
I create an admin-level account for myself and any admin or editor accounts that are needed for clients and collaborators. I also remove the default “admin” user name if it exists (a basic but wise step for WordPress security).

Depending on the needs of the project, we might have to preinstall plugins. Here are the major categories of plugins:

  • Form management
Migrating a form “as is” is usually a mess; simply recreating it using a forms plugin is usually easier. My current favorite is Gravity Forms ($39+ per license). Other options are Formidable (with free and pro versions) and Contact Form 7 (entirely free).
  • SEO management
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a touchy subject. My philosophy is to build content for people, not for search engines. That being said, there is a common-sense approach to SEO that is solidly supported by the WordPress plugin ecosystem. And if your old website includes custom meta descriptions, giving them a new home during the importing process is important. I recommendWordPress SEO (free).
  • Multiple languages
If your old website supports multiple languages, WordPress has you covered. My plugin of choice is WPML ($79 per license, free for non-profits). Another option isqTranslate (free).
  • Security
WordPress security is a topic near and dear to me. The increasing popularity of WordPress has made it a target for security attacks. WordPress itself is rarely the problem; a poorly secured hosting environment or an outdated or poorly developed plugin usually is. I use managed WordPress hosting for the majority of my projects, which offers a good foundation for solid WordPress security. Options include WPEngine, ZippyKid, Pagely and Synthesis. In addition to managed hosting (and especially if you opt for a non-managed host), consider installing a security plugin, such as Better WP Security (free) or Wordfence (also free). Last but not least, review the “Hardening WordPress” guide in the Codex.
  • Backups
If you opt for managed hosting, backups are usually included (make sure, though). If you’re managing backups yourself or you want an extra layer of data protection, great options are available, including VaultPress ($15+ a month), CodeGuard ($5+ a month), BackupBuddy ($75+ per license) and BackWPup (free).

Create A Tab Widget In WordPress

In this WordPress tutorial, you’ll learn how to create the Tabber widget, which is very useful for when multiple widgets need to fit in a sidebar. It saves space and streamlines the appearance and functionality of your WordPress-powered website.

In the past, there were different methods of doing this, most of which were theme-dependent. As we’ll see in this tutorial, creating a tabbed widget that works on its own and with any theme is easily accomplished. So, let’s jump in and learn how to create our own Tabber widget, which we’ve made available for downloading at the end of this article.

Saving Sidebar Space

The main advantage of tabs is that you can fit more widgets into the sidebar. And tabs look good. The image below shows how much vertical space is taken up by three standard widgets (using the default Twenty Ten theme). The default layout is on the left, and our tabber widget is on the right:

Before We Start

A few things are useful to know. Because we are building a widget in this article, you might want to learn about WordPress’ Widgets API and how to create a basic widget:

Use these resources as needed while following the tutorial along.

The Basic Idea

The idea for this widget is simple: select a sidebar, and the Tabber widget will grab all of its widgets and display them as tabs. In the widget’s interface, you can select a sidebar, specify an extra CSS class and optionally apply your own styles. When enabled, the plugin will register an extra sidebar (which may be removed if you have other ways to add a sidebar). Then, using the same code, you can add more sidebars, and each of them can hold instances of the Tabber widget.

To control your widgets, Tabber uses idTabs for jQuery, created by Sean Catchpole, but you could always use another solution. Note that additional CSS is loaded to style the resulting widget.

So, the goal with Tabber is to transform any widget’s output into markup that can be used to display tabs

tags for this. Other themes may use complicated markup that can’t be predicted or successfully transformed into the output needed for tabs.

The solution to this problem is to intercept the widget’s parameters before rendering, and then to restructure them into useful structures using JavaScript or jQuery for the tabbed output. More on that later.

action. We register the widget on line 17.

Widget interface.

The Main Tabber Widget Class

Tabber is a normal widget, and in this case it is located

SETTINGS: PLUGIN INTERFACE

The widget has two settings:

  • “sidebar”
to hold the ID of the selected sidebar
  • “css”
for extra CSS classes to style the Tabber widget

When selecting which sidebar to use, you must avoid using the sidebar that holds the Tabber widget. Otherwise, it will spin into endless recursion. To avoid this, before rendering the widget’s content, check whether the selected sidebar is the same as the parent sidebar. This can’t be prevented while the widget is set up, because the widget’s panel affords very little control over this.

Also, using sidebars that are not normally used is a good idea. To help with this, the plugin includes sample code to help you add an extra sidebar.

This function requires the name of the sidebar, and it will display all widgets in it. Line 9 contains the check mentioned before, to prevent recursion when displaying sidebar content if the selected sidebar is the same as the parent sidebar.

Lastly, the filter is removed, and any widgets belonging to other sidebars are displayed normally, without modification.

WIDGET MODIFICATION

To prepare for the transformation done with JavaScript, the tabber widget includes the

tag for the control tabs. After this filter, the widget’s output will look like this:

JavaScript For Widget Transformation

Once the widget’s presentation is modified, one thing remains: to complete the transformation and get the titles from the widgets and turn them into tabs:This code uses jQuery to get all of the Tabber widgets based on the

  • will hold only its content.

Final Tabber example.

Finally, when all this is done, we enable idTabs to activate the tabs control. And with the default styling loaded from the

How To Install The Tabber Plugin

As with any other plugin, unpack it, upload it to WordPress’ plugins folder, and activate it from the plugins panel. When you go to the “Widgets” panel, you will see an additional sidebar, “Tabber Example Sidebar,” at the end on the right. And “Available Widgets” will show one more widget, “D4P Smashing Tabber.”

Add this new widget to the “Main Sidebar.” From the “Sidebar” widget drop-down menu, select “Tabber Example Sidebar,” and save the widget. Now, open the “Tabber Example Sidebar” and add the widgets you want to be displayed as tabs. You can add as many widgets as you want, but pay attention because if you add too many, the tab’s control will break to two or more lines, and it will not look pretty. Starting with two or three widgets is best.

Conclusion

Creating one widget to display several other widgets as a tab isn’t very difficult, as you can see. The trick is in adjusting the widgets’ output to a format that can be transformed into tabs, and then using JavaScript to display them. We’ve explored just one possible transformation method; you can always experiment with ways to rearrange widget elements.

We used idTabs here, but there are many methods of displaying tabs, and not all of them require JavaScript:

I prefer using a jQuery-based solution, and idTabs is very easy to use and easy to style and it works in all browsers. Check out other solutions, and see what extra features they offer to enhance your own tabbed widgets.
